Chelsi here…….so the whole live-like-we-used-to-live is still not a thing, however, each week more and more stores, restaurants, and salons are opening. If you are one to venture out, it is still recommended (and mandatory in my family) to social distance and wear a mask.
Even though I have been enjoying this time of wearing less or no makeup indoors, when I do venture out, I like a little sense of normalcy, event the ‘new’ kind. For me, that means putting on makeup. My daughter has been making masks (sewing lessons are paying off!) and the first time I put it on, something wasn’t right. The craftsmanship was fine, made of quality fabric, I even coordinated my outfit to match, but something wasn’t right. If you have been reading my blogs, you know that I love wearing a bold, red lip, but with my mask on, my Tom Ford Cherry Lush was hidden and my face looked washed out.
I realized that in this new mask-wearing society, I need to tone down my lips and ramp up my eye shadow, liner, mascara and brows. I have always kept my eye makeup very simple so this was not easy for me. My go to look is simple – neutral shadow, black liquid liner and a coat of mascara. I have done a lot of experimenting (and online shopping!) in the past few weeks and have found some great new products that make your eyes shine.
Better Brows
I have always left my brows to the professionals to shape and maintain. Since I have been on my own, I found the Benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil. It is dual ended – one side applies natural looking color to fill in the brow and the other end is a brush to help shape. It is dummy proof, adds definition to your brows, and helps shape your entire face.
The Eyes Have It
I am loving the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Eye Palette in Medium. It has 5 shades, 2 neutral all-over shades and 3 deeper, defining shades, so you can go as simple or as dramatic as you feel. I have been applying the dark shades in my crease and along my bottom lash line when wearing a mask to add intensity. When I really want to experiment with color, I always reach for my Urban Decay Naked Palettes. They offer a myriad of shades, some out of my comfort zone, but I am taking this opportunity to try new looks. Most of my face is covered so why not?!
Before applying any eyeshadow, I recommend using a primer to keep shadow in place. My favorite since the day it was developed is Laura Mercier’s Eye Basics. It prevents creasing and helps your shadow stay in place all day.
Finishing Touches
I love, love liquid liner. I know I am in the minority here but a simple yet intense black line instantly adds oomph to your eyes. My favorite is the Sephora Long Lasting Eyeliner High Precision Brush in Black. It really does last and is smudge-proof but what makes this product is the brush. It is very thin so it is easy to control. I finish my eyes with 2 coats of Hourglass Caution Mascara, which is great for length and volume.
But my lips…
All of this mask wearing has not been kind to my lipstick. If I do have some on and then put on my mask, it becomes quite the smudged mess. I have started keeping tissues or makeup remover sheets in my car. If I have lipstick on, I wipe it off before putting on my mask and then reapply later. If you want to leave some of the color on, use the tissue to blot your lips a few times before putting on your mask.
