Well here we are….again. Still. Staying home. Washing hands. Wearing masks. This time around though things feel much more serious, masks are now mandatory and will be for the foreseeable future. The hashtag #wearadamnmask has been trending and celebs like Jennifer Aniston have gotten in the game to encourage people to wear a mask to protect themselves and others.
Since that is the case, I thought I’d revisit my post which ran back on May 16, 2020 on‘mask makeup’. For those of us who feel that they need some makeup, the eyes are the focus since everything else is covered up. So here are a few additions of my favorite products and suggestions to make your eyes pop. We do know that we are still going out on occassion and know that if in a restaurant where masks can be temporarily removed, the lips must also be addressed and we have updates for that freqently asked question as well.
First things, first
Before you apply any color, pamper your skin with a great nourishing eye cream. For these times, my go to has been Origins Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream. It hydrates, works well with concealer, but I especially love it right now because it visibly brightens the under eye area so my eye look more awake (because we are all losing a little sleep right now!).
Better Brows
I have always left my brows to the professionals to shape and maintain. Since I have been on my own, I found the Benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil. It is dual ended – one side applies natural looking color to fill in the brow and the other end is a brush to help shape. It is dummy proof, adds definition to your brows, and helps shape your entire face.
The Eyes Have It
I have never been a fan of those 10+ shade eye palettes as most of the shades go unused on me. However, times have changed (boy, have they!) and now I find myself reaching for more palettes and using this time to experiment. Right now, I am loving the Natasha Denona Bronze Eyeshadow Palette. The colors are all still in more my comfort zone of nudes and neutrals but give me a chance to play with intensities and shine factor.
Before applying any eyeshadow, I recommend using a primer to keep shadow in place. My favorite since the day it was developed is Laura Mercier’s Eye Basics. It prevents creasing and helps your shadow stay in place all day.
Finishing Touches
I love, love liquid liner. I know I am in the minority here but a simple yet intense black line instantly adds oomph to your eyes. My favorite is the Sephora Long Lasting Eyeliner High Precision Brush in Black. It really does last and is smudge-proof but what makes this product is the brush. It is very thin so it is easy to control. I finish my eyes with 2 coats of Hourglass Caution Mascara, which is great for length and volume.
But my lips…
All of this mask wearing has not been kind to my lipstick. A lip stain works best in these times and I have switched to my NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil and I know Roz is loving The Lip Bar Liquid Matte to keep her always red lips in tact. A few other great ones are By Terry Matte Liquid Lipstick and the YSL Liquid Matte Lip Stain. However, here’s a trick I learned during my Laura Mercier days (from Laura herself!) on how you can turn any lipstick into a stain that won’t move. Apply your lipstick (not a gloss) as normal. Then take a tissue and separate the layers so you only have a single sheet in your hand. Press it against your lips and gently apply setting powder on top of the tissue. The tissue blots the excess lipstick that could potentially smudge under your mask and the powder sets the color so it won’t it budge. An easy trick to try!
Editor’s Note: Roz here and I know that many of you have been asking a lot about lipstick that doesn’t smudge for those rare moments when you remove your mask, usually to nosh! Please click on the links highlighted above on some of the tried-and-true lip products that we have tried, and by all means try Chelsi’s tip on keeping the lipstick that you own on your lips……..they are working!
Let us know what new makeup tips and tricks you are doing while wearing a mask. We hope you all are staying safe and healthy and again, by all means…..#wearadamnmask!!
I definitely need to step up my eye makeup game during this time! Thanks for the shopping suggestions!
