Launch, a Downtown area pop-up boutique, collaborated with Discovery Green recently to host its first ever fashion show featuring local designers in Discovery Green’s 12 acre urban park located at Downtown’s Avenida Houston
Spring was definitely in the air when Houston’s fashion and art lovers were treated to a celebration of style at an outdoor fashion show and market featuring many of Houston’s most talented designers, 40 to be exact. All coordinated by Launch’s founder and retail director of Houston First, Sydney Dao, this fashion runway presentation allowed many local apparel and accessories designer the opportunity to showcase their designs in a sophisticated and edgy way. The event was free and open to the public. Some of the participants included headliner, Designer Chloe Dao, winner of Project Runway Season 2, plus Of Myth & Muse, Marilyn Biles, Edwigne Pierre, Magpies & Peacocks and Kimono Zulu to name a few. Below are some of the fashion highlights from the show……..
Fashion and art collided as the park’s winter art installation, GUST: Celebrating a Decade of Discovery, commissioned from Mexico City-based design studio Cocolab, illuminated the runway. Composed of nearly 2,000 custom-made pinwheels installed along Discovery Green’s Brown Foundation Promenade.
“While the Cocolab team was working on the design concept for GUST, I couldn’t help but notice that the work’s vivid colors and the sense of movement along the Brown Promenade took on the feel of a fashion runway,” said Judy Nyquist, chair of the Discovery Green Conservancy’s Public Art Committee. “As the park’s neighbor and a champion of local designers, LAUNCH emerged as a natural fit for our programming partner. We are thrilled to see our beloved allée used in this new and unique way.”
This first ever fashion show collaboration at Discovery Green brought together Launch, a retail platform for Houston-based designers, Houston First, the single voice of Houston’s convention and art facilities and Discovery Green Conservancy which works with hundreds of programming partners to present more than 700 artistic, musical, educational, family-friendly and health-focused events each year, most of which are presented free to the public.
