What an evening it was at the “Night of Broadway Stars” event, benefitting Covenant House Texas, held at the beautiful Wortham Theater.
With an audience of 450 strong, the evening was filled to the brim with a lineup of acclaimed Broadway talent, all of whom performed in aid of Covenant House Texas. If you aren’t familiar, this admirable organization extends its support to provide shelter and services for local youth who have unfortunately experienced homelessness or trafficking.
Elaine and Robert Shaffer chaired the event and the night was dedicated to honoring the Trini and O.C. Mendenhall Foundation for their ongoing commitment to our beloved Houston community.
The highlight of the night was the breathtaking performances. Award-winning Broadway composer and lyricist Neil Berg helped produce the event, and his wife, Rita Harvey, gave a dazzling performance of hit songs from Phantom of the Opera. Jason Bernard, who started tap dancing at six, gave everyone a fun tap lesson right from the stage! And the cheers got louder when Houston native Alan H. Green took the stage. And when LaKisha Jones and Catherine Brunell performed, you could feel the energy in the room rise.
But the highlight of the evening was when Leslie Bourne, the executive director of Covenant House Texas, introduced two youth residents who shared their deeply touching stories of resilience and hope. And shortly after, eight Covenant House youth performed “Seasons of Love” from the hit Broadway musical Rent.
After the show, we had the chance to mix and mingle with the performers over dessert and coffee. It was truly an unforgettable night, filled with music, hope, and a lot of love.
