Every season I pick a great dress or look that is my favorite and post it to my desktop for aspiration! For me this season, very early on when I saw it on the red carpet, moments after the runway shows had ended and being worn by Kate Winslet, I thought “this is the one.” Sexy but respectable, it was Dots like I had not seen them done before and research led me to a modernization of polka dots fresh from the fall runway of Stella McCartney. I love LBD’s and anyone that knows me knows I own a lot of them, but what made this so special was the one-sleeve/one-side of black dots embroidered on to nude sheer……stunning new treatment, I thought! A must have for me, if only in my dreams.
Well, as luck would have it, this dress really is a mini-collection within a collection that she did in both head-to-toe Black with embroidered dots and reversed in White, spotted with paillettes. That was my first introduction to what would become a major trend editorialized in all the fashion mags and that would continue to show up on Red Carpets by the likes of Jane Fonda, Julia Roberts and Emma Stone to name a few.
The dresses featured above (center one is my desktop place holder and fave dress) are made of a stretchy wool fabric mixed with spotted embroidered nude sheer and epitomize McCartney’s absolute sexy ease of dressing for those times when the modern woman wants to show that she can turn it on!
In contrast to the McCartney looks, are daytime looks in graphic dots, many of which were inspired from Marc Jacobs’ return to his roots, where his first collection of 20+ years ago was covered in spots. His collection, very graphic in the details, shows dots of all sizes, shapes and done in black/white or color, again, not your basic polka dots of years passed. Many others to join the Dot brigade were Lanvin, Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, et al.
Not limited to apparel, a great kick for your wardrobe can come from Spotted accessories. Pattern legs are in this season and dotted sheers with a great boot or bootie, can make last year’s frocks feel new again. I’m also crazy about dotted scarves or handbags, particularly as in the clutch I’ve shown…just enough! Haven’t we all learned that accessories are the easiest way to introduce a trend into our wardrobes? So do it!
Spots and dots are all the rage this fall. What I’ve shown are the newest looks but if you own polka dots in your closet, fear not, my guess is that with a little update like a pop of color in accessorizing or a colored or black tight, you can make it all look new from your very own archives….after all, that’s what Jacobs did!

Love spots and dots, too!!
I got a great Marimekko black and white dot dress with a red top at the newly opened Marimekko store in the Copenhagen airport.
Fun to wear.
