Dr. Angela is back with us to share some of the newest things in facial plastic surgery as we ready for the summer days ahead. The newest focus of the facial area receiving a lot of attention these days is the NECK, one of the more obvious signs of aging on a woman’s face. Please read below for some interesting facts about the newest technique that is just now becoming available.
Want to get rid of the fat under your chin but don’t want to go under the knife? The FDA just approved the first non-surgical treatment FDA approved for submental fullness! This is an exciting development in non-invasive technologies!
The fat under the chin is usually genetic. Therefore, it can persist despite improving your diet and exercising. Even when you are doing everything right, it may not go away. This can be very frustrating to many people.
Kybella, also known as ATX 101, is deoxycholic acid. This is a substance that is already in your body. It is made by your liver to help dissolve fats in your diet to aid in absorption. When it is injected into the submental fat, this substance disrupts the membrane on the fat cells and permanently dissolves those cells.
Small amounts of Kybella are injected into multiple sites under your chin into the fat to get an even distribution. The injections are a series that can vary depending on the person, amount of fat and your goal. Some people may only need one session, but others may need up to 6 treatments at least a month apart.
Dissolving fat in a progressive way that most people won’t notice that you did anything, but just see that you look good with an in office procedure. That sounds pretty good. So, what’s the downside? Some of the risks that are possible are swelling and bruising at the injection site (which is true with any injection), possible injury to nerves or glands in the area (why you should have someone very familiar with the anatomy as the injector, like a surgeon) and difficulty swallowing due to swelling in the area (which always resolved and most within a couple of days). In the hands of a skilled injector, the product is still relatively low risk and avoids surgery. Also, you want to make sure that you see a physician you trust to consult before having the injection, because if you have extra skin or prominent muscles underlying the fat, the injection could make these more visible. So you want to make sure it is right for you. Kybella is scheduled to be on the market this summer and I think this could change the way we think about fat!
