Beth here and tis the season for summer soirées with both The Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo falling on the same day this Saturday. Houstonians can have their pick of events all over the city to attend, but for those looking for a little “Cinco In the City”, we’ve got you covered. The folks over at Silver Street Studios have teamed up with In The City Productions to host their first ever Cinco de Mayo event this Saturday with live paintings, food, music, salsa lessons and more. Here’s our rundown of what to expect at Silver Street Studios this weekend.
To open the festivities, the warehouse is being turned into “La Plaza”, hosting a cultural experience for the whole family with local vendors and artisans selling regional Mexican foods, home goods, jewelry and other arts and crafts from the region. Locally renowned street artist Gonzo will be doing live painting on site while guests can dine on sample dishes from La Cuchara and Jarritos. For the kids, Indivisible Art Projects will be hosting an interactiveFrida Kahlo exhibit where they can not only learn about the legendary artist, but also create their own inspired pieces. The family friendly activities run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday with tickets running $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
As we head into the night, the event transforms into the “Margarita and Mezcal Experience”with live music from Bulbo and salsa lessons from Love Dance Houston. Event goers can also dine on locally influenced cuisine, including a roasted pig, from various well known chefs around town, including famous chef, Monica Pope. If you want to dial up your evening and go for the VIP package, you can learn about mezcal and get a tasting of Tres Papalotes, Cheech Marin’s top-shelf Mezcal. A portion of the proceeds from the entire day’s events will go towards the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts program, so Houstonian’s can have the chance to give back while enjoying La Plaza. The evenings events run from 7 pm till midnight with general admission running $45 per person and $100 for the VIP level.
