It was a day filled with elegance, Italian flair, and a celebration of heritage as over 350 guests gathered at the River Oaks Country Club for the Italian Cultural & Community Center (ICCC) luncheon, Bella Roma. The sold-out event was chaired by Karen Remington and Saula Centa Valente, who helped raise a record-breaking $212,000 in support of the ICCC’s mission to advance, celebrate, and preserve Italian culture and heritage.
The highlight of the afternoon was the heartfelt recognition of honorees Debbie and Rudy Festari, who brought a wave of new supporters to the event, ensuring its resounding success. Their passion for the community shone through in every detail, from the warm welcomes to Rudy’s emotional speech. In true Italian style, the luncheon featured a fashion show sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue, and styled for the runway by our Jeanne Ruberti, showcasing exquisite Italian designs that dazzled the crowd. Fall’s chicest styles graced the runway, providing guests with a glimpse of the season’s must-haves with an Italian point-of-view!
The event kicked off with a stirring rendition of “Con te partiro” performed by Gabriel Chona Rueda and Andreea Mut, setting a refined tone for the afternoon. Owen Conflenti of KPRC 2 skillfully served as Master of Ceremonies, keeping the crowd engaged throughout the program. Erika Myers, Executive Director of the ICCC, took the stage to share the ICCC’s vital work in the community, including this luncheon in its 5th year of existence and emphasizing the importance of celebrating Italian culture here in Houston through its many classes and presentations within the Italian arts, including Opera, Fine Arts, Wine appreciation and of course Italian Language lessons from beginners to advanced.
Co-Chairs Remington and Valente took to the podium to introduce Debbie Festari, who spoke passionately about her husband Rudy’s journey to the United States at a young age and the pride they both take in his Italian roots. Debbie’s heartfelt words highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions for future generations. She then invited their close friend, Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell, to share a few words about Rudy. Bagwell’s remarks added a touching personal note, praising Rudy’s friendship and dedication.
Rudy Festari, speaking in his native Italian, captivated the audience with his love of fashion, family, and gratitude for the many friends and supporters who joined them for this special day. His speech earned a standing ovation, with their son, Valentino, beaming with pride as he joined in the applause.
The room buzzed with excitement throughout the afternoon as guests mingled over Italian wines, bid on auction items, artfully curated by Auction Chairs: Holly Hall Dean and Roberta Bentley, and participated in the raffle. The vibrant atmosphere perfectly mirrored the spirit of Italy, creating a truly memorable day for everyone in attendance.
