Beauty Entrepreneur, Mother of Four and Hometown Gal, Tiffany Masterson has Made her Mark in the Beauty World and Making That Industry Take Notice as her Drunk Elephant Skincare is growing so fast that an explosion is surely on the horizon!
For those of you that follow My Red Glasses, you know that this is not the first time I’ve written about Tiffany and her amazing climb to fame with her Drunk Elephant Skin Care line. I first wrote about DE in July of 2014 and have been following her brand ever since. So, I began early this year trying to reach out and re-connect to gain some insight into where she was headed. Well, needless to say trying to get two busy ladies together was not easy, especially when one is a Mom of four and in the process of building a beauty empire that was growing so fast that when I read in WWD that it was on a short list of beauty companies to watch in 2017, I really got anxious and excited for her. Well, we finally got our schedules to cooperate and we met up recently for some coffee (me) and tea (Tiff) and what a catch-up that was for me. We chatted for a couple of hours, she shared some new tips on just how she has altered and is applying her own skin care regime, a hint of what she was working on for new products, her recent capital investors that came on board with the big bucks to aid her growth, which included an increased high powered staff that included the former CEO of Urban Decay and others. I was also intrigued to find that on a smaller, more casual scale she was also being financially supported by another lady that I have great admiration for and have followed forever, world-renowned blogger/influencer, Leandra Medine, the Man Repeller, and if that wasn’t enough, she generously topped it off with some great new products for me to try and to try them in the way that she uses them and I’m happy to report that after two weeks, I am doing that, I love it and I definitely see a difference in my skin. So somehow, space permitting, I will attempt to share some of this with you all today.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Drunk Elephant and/or Tiffany Masterson, please take a second and read my original story (click here) and you will learn about the origin of the name, hint: what happens to elephants when they eat fruit from the Marula tree, you guessed it, they get drunk!!! Plus more to Tiffany’s story of how it all began and what has driven her to make her products as she has seen fit to make them.
Today I want to bring you up to date with just what has been happening to Tiffany and DE, whose company, only three years since it’s birth, has taken off like nothing the beauty industry has seen. (Sephora, where she is in all 360 stores, has been quoted as saying its one of the fastest growing skin-care companies that they have seen in the history of their business!)
Why is that, what is her secret…..here are some things I learned over coffee. For one thing her motto has always been to keep it simple as she produces a line that is both natural and synthetic. She combines a host of natural ingredients and “really good” synthetics that are high in antioxidants. Also, her products are all non-toxic, clean, compatible and effective. Tiffany who mixes many of her own ingredients to get to the product that she desires, also insists on certain ingredients that will never be found in her products. First, is essential oils, (this one surprised me) but Tiffany feels that while many brands use essential oils to adhere to the “all natural” it could cause skin sensitivity. Other ingredients that she steers clear from are silicones, fragrance, chemical sunscreen, drying alcohol and SLS. Tiffany calls her approach a preventive approach not a treatment approach. She said adamantly that she tells people “not to come to me with acne”, instead she works a backwards approach, asks you to begin eliminating things that you have been doing until you clear up and then use her products to prevent it from happening again.
Another tip that she has been shared was to not wash your face in the morning! Yikes, said I, don’t know if I can do that (haven’t been able to make that plunge yet??!) She believes that if you do your proper nighttime treatment, when you awake in the morning your top layer of skin or “acid mantle” is there to protect your skin for the day and should not be washed away!
Last tip: you do not have to put on your products in any regimented order…..just use appropriate for time of day (day vs. evening regime) but by all means, mix the products in the palm of your hand and apply them to your skin. I’ve been doing that and I like it!
She has introduced some brand new products that I have tried and love them all…..one favorite is her TLC Baby Facial, her first mask. Love it and the way my face feels after. Another, that I have started using every day, is her Tinted sunscreen(Umbra Tinte)..…I’ve been using it in place of my tinted moisturizer on days when I don’t feel I need as much of a make-up look. BTW, as a reminder, Tiffany’s entire premise behind her products is that they make your skin look so good that you need not wear any make-up……she doesn’t and looks magnificent, I can’t say that I’m quite there yet!
Below is an overview of her 11 products in her line today…..when we first chatted, it was 6 and she has more in the works for the remainder of this year and definitely for next year.
