Athlesure-wear is not just a trend, it’s becoming a lifestyle! These pieces are closet staples, especially when it’s common to see them even in the workplace. Athleisure is still going strong in 2017, both on the runway and in street style. New brands are popping up, high fashion designers are launching collections of their own, and workout brands are branching out into ready-to-wear. It’s Alyssa here chatting with you about what’s new in athleisure from MRG’s favorite brands…and a few new ones!
Carbon38
Carbon38 (one of my all time favorite workout-wear brands!) carries multiple fitness brands and a private label that launched in 2015. Jonathan Simkhai, a designer known for body-con runway looks, recently collabed with Carbon38 for 16-piece line that includes silhouettes like a jumpsuit and palazzo track pants. The site is also launching a new line February 28th that merges high end activewear and high fashion ready-to-wear. Think a-line dresses, bell sleeves, wrap tops, and other ready-to-wear pieces that are certainly NOT for the gym!
Aday
Aday, an athleisure brand known for a 2000-person waitlist for a pair of leggings, is branching out with everyday pieces. They are launching a capsule collection called Technical Tailored. The collection is three basic pieces every wardrobe needs – a classic white shirt, stretch trousers, and racerback tank. While these pieces aren’t necessarily for the gym, the fabrics “infuse comfort, breathability and longevity into classic wardrobe staples.”
Mission Statement by Hilary Swank
Hilary Swank recently launched this athleisure line which she describes as “high performance and high fashion.” The name Mission Statement is meant to remind women to keep in touch with their personal mission in life and strive to be the best they can be. Prices range from $125 to $1,150, and pieces like this puffer jacket and shawl neck top are perfect for movement not just at the gym!
Athleta
Athleta, the athleisure sister-store of The Gap, is adding fair trade styles to their collection. The collection of more than 40 styles helps support Fair Trade USA, an organization that empower women and improve the lives of factory workers and their families. This collection is in addition to their wildly popular swimwear, chic hiking gear, and metro collection perfect for the woman on the go! Their pieces are almost too pretty to wear to the gym!
Sweaty Betty
If you don’t know about Sweaty Betty, you should! It’s a British athleisure brand that designs gear that makes you want to go to the gym. They just launched their S/S 2017 line inspired by Morocco that includes pieces like reversible yoga pants, a long sleeve top with cactus print, and colorful sports bras. They’ve also teamed up with New Balance for an exclusive limited edition sneaker here. FYI, they also have an interactive sports bra guide to help you find a bra that doesn’t sacrifice style for support!
Fabletics
Fabletics continues to rise in popularity because of it’s high quality and affordability. Personally, I’ve never been able to snag any pieces because my size is always sold out! New collections are released every month, and they’ve got the perfect gear for yoga, running, and everything in between. Two of my favorite outfits from their most recent collection are here and here! As of late last year, they aren’t just e-commerce. They’ve opened 18 brick and mortar stores to date, with plans to be at 30 by the end of 2017 (sadly none in Houston yet). Fabletics is also launching an online workout platform with free videos for VIP members – will they help make us look like Kate Hudson??
Outdoor Voices
Outdoor Voices is the quintessential “cool girl” athleisure brand – Leandra Medine of Man Repeller, Lena Dunham, and Gwyneth Paltrow are among the many fans! The brand has collabed with A.P.C on a fitness line called A.P.C.O.V, they became the first activewear brand sold in J.Crew stores, and they host in-store events like yoga and dog walks to bring the community together. Be sure to check out their new spring arrivals of color block leggings and crepe track pants, or pick up a “kit” to get your OV wardrobe started!
Honorable Mentions – Lululemon, Under Armour, & Stella McCartney for Adidas
- Lululemon, dubbed the pioneer for athleisure-wear, released a capsule collection with Central Saint Martins MA Fashion!
- Professional Ballerina Misty Copeland partnered with Under Armour on an edgy collection of street-chic pieces.
- Stella McCartney transformed the Adidas Pure Boost X sneaker in her most recent collection. They are super sleek and come in multiple colors!
