Three years ago while visiting London, I made my first priority to visit TOPSHOP, Oxford Circus in the heart of the West End and see what I had been hearing was the hottest store on High Street and I was not disappointed. In fact, I had said to my hubby that I wish I had brought a rolling suitcase into the store as there was so much I could purchase that I would wear, as would many of my friends and certainly my daughters. Well, I was right….everything I wore when I returned, people wanted and wanted to know how to get it. During that pre-USA selling era, there was no NYC store yet and online was for browsing only and no purchasing was possible. Wow, what a difference three years has made. Not only have they been successful opening their own stores in NY, Chicago, Las Vegas and recently, L.A., they made what many of us considered a bold move to partner with Nordstrom for a multi-store roll-out in 2012. Everyone, myself included, asked the question, why Nordstrom? A store perceived to be more conservative such as Nordstrom has proven to be a successful compliment to the fast, younger fashions of TOPSHOP and TOPMAN. As per Peter Nordstrom, “We can literally measure that TOPSHOP is attracting a lot of new customers. The average age is significantly younger — like 10 years younger that the typical Nordstrom’s women’s apparel customer.
For their initial roll-out of 8 stores, the only Texas locale chosen was Austin…..I resented it but got it! Great demographics for their first attempt. However, now as they have worked out many of the start-up kinks and have decided to expand, Texas is fairing very well. Houston, San Antonio and Dallas are all slated for new TOPSHOP/TOPMAN additions beginning for Houston on September 30 in our Galleria store.
About TOPSHOP: Since it launched in 1964, TOPSHOP has become a major British style authority and one of fashion’s biggest success stories. In 1994, it’s first TOPSHOP flagship store was born in London’s Oxford Circle, where it remains today. A pioneer in collaborations, TOPSHOP is also well known for nurturing of young talent that we know, love and wear today….Christopher Kane, Hussein Chalayan and Mary Kantranzou to name a few.
About TOPMAN: Has earned its sartorial stripes with an unswerving, energetic approach to producing truly exciting high-street men’s fashion. Born in 1978, TOPMAN has also been supporting young British design talent for many years. After introducing TOPMAN, Nordstrom quickly discovered suiting was a classification that could sell in a greater number of stores so the distribution is being expanded here.
