About Petra: Many of us know Petra Nemcova as the supermodel that she is. If you were lucky enough, you may have seen this Czech-born beauty grace the runways of Milan, Paris or New York. We have certainly seen her face on many campaigns, from Cartier to Victoria’s Secret but most recently with Clinique and Chopard and most famously for the modeling job that “changed her career”, says the famous model turned entrepreneur, the Sports Illustrated Cover of 2003. What you may not know about Petra, is that after suffering great personal tragedy but surviving herself from the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand, she has become a worldwide philanthropist and ambassador worldwide, including Haiti, which she now calls home, all primarily for children. She has formed a non-profit of her own, entitled Happy Hearts Fund, which sets up schools for children of natural disasters that are set-up after the first responders have left and the children are left on their own to make the most of their lives. She is very proud of the fact that they have been able to establish 84 schools worldwide in the 7 years of their existence. Quite an accomplishment but not surprising after chatting with this powerhouse, driven woman, who is not just beautiful on the outside but truly cares for humanity and nature from within. She says humbly that it has all been done by a team of “caring hearts”, to which I responded that is due to a leader with the “most caring heart” of all, that is relentless in her efforts to help mankind survive after natural disasters.
Be The Light New York: Petra’s most recent venture is to establish a home décor company that is an expression of what she enjoys most in life next to her family and that is her love of travel. It is the launch of this collection, that brings her to Houston next week, on Thursday, December 12th to Cakewalk Style Shop, to personally meet & greet customers and personalize candles for each that are purchased. I am unfortunately unable to attend….will be in NYC, so Petra and I had a rather lengthy chat where I learned so much about this amazingly unique and detailed collection from the woman behind it all. When I asked “Why Candles?”, in her first home collection that she defines as “playful luxury”, her response is that she loves fragrance and that it has been proven that the sense of smell is the first sense to take you back to a moment in time the fastest, that you will recall, usually favorably. Her goal, to fill the home with a beautiful scent and then other home items will follow. She is working on baby alpaca blankets and pillows from Peru and eventually items that will show off Haitian craftsmanship……but for now, it’s all about the “World Collection” of six distinct candles, all made in New York City.
Introduction of first products under the “Be The Light New York” Collection….six unique candles that represent Petra’s travels and the treasures from those travels. Each candle is made in U.S. (NY specifically) of the finest ingredients of that country and each holder is individually hand inscribed by artisans taking a day and a half per container. The map of that country that she is representing covers three of the four sides of the candle and when (3) candles are placed together, are guaranteed to connect…..that is pure artistry!
