No one does sexy, body hugging apparel better than Donna Karan, and when she showed her newest collection in New York Fashion Week she definitely returned to what she does best. She first, admittedly, stepped back to the concept that she began her business on in the 80’s……what she has always referred to as seven easy pieces and this collection was its evolution.
There was lots of richly colored draped jersey in colors that kicked off with Essential Black, leading into every metal shade of Gray and Stone to a warm earthy Brown. Touches that modernized the stretch jersey that clinged to every body curve was the use of slits in all of the right places that revealed skin or mesh inserts. There was also lots of layering with capelets over dresses (one of my favorite add-on pieces this Fall), curly fur shearlings, jackets and coats that were luxuriously made of wool and cashmere with the addition of neoprene to give it that body-hugging, fitted styling and were layered, in many cases, over one another.(coats as a layering piece another favorite look of mine)
Accessories that I especially loved were the sculpted body jewelry sliced with silver or gold in cuffs, collars and belts. I was wild about the elbow length suede gloves, and also crazy for the pure-suede platform shoes and over the knee boots.
In her show notes, Donna claimed that “these are clothes for women like me…who live and work 24/7 with passion and dress with emotion.” That’s why I love her clothes so…that is definitely me and I’m sure that many of her long time followers feel the same way. That by designing for herself, she is designing for us!
A few celebs that were there to cheer Donna on were Uma Thurman, Gretchen Mol and longtime friend Bernadette Peters. From Houston, there was our Donna Karan Ambassador Sheridan Williams, Karen Mayell and Clifford Pugh and myself on a very cold and rainy NYC afternoon…but it was worth it!
