About the Event: As a regular attendee from afar (online) of this traditionally “First Monday in May” event sponsored by Vogue, is a command performance. It was begun by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert in 1948 as a fundraiser for the newly founded Metropolitan of Art’s Costume Institute. It was in 1973 when it was put under the direction of iconic fashion director and idol of mine, Diana Vreeland that it became the celebrity-packed spectacular for which it is known today. This event, continuing under Anna Wintour, as mentioned below, has been coined the “Oscars of Fashion”.
Affectionately referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” the Met Gala 2021 is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event welcomes stars, young creatives, and industry paragons. The Costume Institute will host its first two-part exhibition, on the theme of American Fashion, during 2021 and 2022. Part one, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will open in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on September 18, 2021, and will remain on display when “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” opens on May 5, 2022 in the period rooms of the American Wing. Both shows will run through September 5, 2022.
Following are some of my favorites of the evening……there were so many that this sampling is only about a half of what is available to browse online…..for the purposes of my post, I focused on what I deemed as “Gala Wear” and not including many of the fun, over-the-top more statement pieces that were there and fun to check out on their own.
Co-hosts for the evening were: Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish, Timothé Chalamet, Naomi Osaka……..Grand Dame Hostess of the Evening…… Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour
