For those of you that know that I have traveled to Italy quite a lot in recent months you know also that I have missed many happenings while I was away……one was the “party of the year” that we covered in absentia. However, thanks to many I was able to get my very own tour of this newest hotel that honors the past and welcomes the future of Downtown Houston hospitality. The C.Baldwin Curio Collection by Hilton, was named in honor of the woman, Charlotte Baldwin Allen, an instrumental figure in the early development of the Bayou City and has been called the “Mother of Houston”.
“C. Baldwin represent the best of what downtown Houston had become while recognizing the women intertwined in its history,” said Maggie Rosa, general manager, C. Baldwin. “A concerted effort was made not only to involve female decision makers in the hotel’s development, but to also create spaces that would appeal to the female traveler while naturally intriguing their male counterparts.”
I was most anxious to see and experience this hotel because of its recognition of women in every aspect of its development. Like its namesake, C. Baldwin is a monument to strong female visionaries. Beginning with its masterful design, brought to life by internationally renowned Lauren Rottet of Houston-based Rottet Studio, as well as award-winning Kate Rohrer of Philadelphia’s ROHE Creative. The guest rooms and suites are outfitted with modern and sophisticated decor and bright natural lighting from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Not to be missed were the many photos, gracing the walls, of fierce Houston women, many I could identify that were portrayed in strong photography by our town’s prominent photojournalist, Elizabeth Conley.
Even the event space that I will be fortunate to see in action this weekend, has been dedicated and named for prominent female leaders or innovators in our community such as Barbara Jordan, Janis Joplin and Adina De Zavala.
The C. Baldwin showcases the best of the city as it relates to hospitality, community and cuisine. Aside from its modern guest rooms and suites, it includes signature restaurant Rosalie Italian Soul from Top Chef Master Chris Cosentino with rising star Sasha Grumman at the helm, a chic clean soon-to-open chic clean beauty retreat, Paloma and one of Houston’s favorite fashion boutiques, Sloan-Hall, has branched out with a satellite shop on C. Baldwin’s ground level.
It has been said and should be noted that C. Baldwin finally brings the story of Houston’s founding female to life, while elevating current voices of modern female groundbreakers. The hotel is a a testament to the strength, beauty and forward-thinking vision of Charlotte Baldwin Allen. Who by the way was not allowed to sign her name on documents……hence all of the “X”‘s in her honor that you will find around the hotel.
Thank you for all of the hospitality shown to me by the C. Baldwin team as I visited!
