After the fire that occurred nearly two years ago, the iconic and neighborhood’s favorite, Cleburne Cafeteria, officially reopens today! Nostalgic comfort food is back just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday! Happy Thursday all, this is Vicheka here!
In 1952, Greek-immigrant, Nick Mickelis and his wife, Patricia bought Cleburne Cafeteria (established in 1941) from Anabelle Collins and Martha Kavanaugh. The original location was on Cleburne Street at Fannin. After it was purchased, they considered turning it into a barbecue restauraunt but the loyal customers of Cleburne opposed the changes and the cafeteria concept stuck throughout the years. Unfortunately, Cleburne Cafeteria has experienced two fires ( once in 1990 and again in 2016, one month before their 75th anniversary). The establishment is now owned and run by their son, George Mickelis. Pat still plays an active role in helping as well.
For newcomers and for long time clientele, the lobby of the new space has a timeline of events that has occurred over the years, paintings, and canvas of Nick’s artwork. As someone who was dining there for the first time, I thoroughly enjoyed the history and learning about the family and all that they’ve been through .
While keeping many old favorites such as the baked squash, chicken and dumplings, and lemon tarts, there were also some changes made. One thing that Mickelis brought back was Steak cooked to order in the evening, the way his father did at the original location on Cleburne Street. And in the evening, beer and wine will be served. As for the health-conscious, power foods are served such as freshly steamed vegetables and kale salads. In the near future, they will also be rolling out a gluten-free menu.
Cleburne Cafeteria stands for home-made simple comfort food without breaking the bank, and that has not changed.
