There was a definite buzz around the Vera Wang show. All the heavy hitters from the Retailers to top Media and Magazine honchos to the Oscar hopefuls. For me, seeing her show for the first time, I found the line-up lovely and more diverse than I had imagined. I was not disappointed and learned more than I had known about Vera Wang.
For starters, I didn’t quite have my mind deprogrammed from bridal and red carpet gowns and was pleasantly surprised to see her show opener be a Camel wool parka and very tailored sportswear. Only to learn that she does outerwear quite well and was doing a flare pant for the first time. All of those hard pieces which also included fur-trimmed jackets and stoles that were shown in a structured sportswear feel (although still softer than many of the rigid looks of her peers), were also mixed luxuriously with soft sheers and prints.
A mixing that we Retailers have always referred to as hard-over-soft or vice versa, meaning structured jackets with soft, flowing, sheer bottoms or the reverse of structured shorts or pants with sheer tops.
(Lots of mixing of sheer fabrications with either woolens or leather for Fall is a trend that I left NYFW with!)
The following are many of my favorite pieces from the collection…
Structured mix of sheer with cropped fur trim jacket in black or in camel with woolen parka.
One of many vibrant Red sheer dresses; mixture of camel sheer top with red to-the-knee shorts (color combo I love!)
Wide black mink collared charcoal jacketed layered ensemble; charcoal Sherpa multi-layered look.
Geometric printed dress; printed sheer with sequin peplum.
Yummy blue hue all over sequined gown; sheer tonal blue ensemble….what drew me to these looks were the divine shades of blue!
Anna Wintour, Maria Sharapova & Grace Cottington look on; Andre Leon Talley, unidentified male and Viola Davis intensely watching the show (Oscar gown hunting, would be a good guess?!)
Not shown: Also in the front row, Ken Downing leading NM crew; Saks, Barney’s, Bloomie’s contingent, Zoe Saldana to name a few.
