When I walked into More Than You Can Imagine yesterday evening, Mauri and Vicki were so excited to show me what they considered to be their “hidden treasures”, and treasures they were… both in the vast collection of jewelry from the unique Gypsy collection and the very special creator of it all, Jeanette Simon.
Jeanette was delightful as she educated me on the historical significance of so many of the special pieces that she began creating with her husband, only 4+ years ago. All taken from the historical artifacts she has searched Instanbul for while visiting there several times a year. Her focus is on the Tophapu Palace, dating back to the Ottoman Empire which existed from 1300-1900. Each and every piece of the Gypsy jewelry has special touches that are taken from many of the actual artifacts that Jeanette has researched and searched for on her many visits there.
About the Gypsy Jewels: They are made of 24 kt. gold plated brass with very unique semi precious stones made into styles and shapes that are symbolic of this era. Tulip earring that stood for immortality were a favorite as well as the pomegranates that were called the Good Fortune Pomegranate and her special neck and ear pieces were featured recently on the front cover of the Smithsonian Catelogue. Also there were the Goddess Diana, the Evil Eye and other symbolic styles of the Ottoman Empire. The prices are affordable luxury, varying from just under $200 to $400+ for most pieces. Focus is on the jewelry for now but stay tuned as there are Scarves in MTYCI right now, handbags, chargers, napkin rings, picture frames and hopefully decorative pillows coming down the pike. All with that same gilded feeling or the beautiful printed Ikat print and other luxury fabrics.
My fave and most memorable pieces: Her most special pieces are the Turquoise One-of-a-kind pieces that are truly ONE, no more! These pieces begin here in the states, in Arizona where the turquoise is mined in Kingman, Arizona and then taken to Istanbul to be crafted. These must be seen at MTYCI, as they are limited on the Gypsy website. I also fell in love with the bracelets of strands of pearls that though originated in white, were dipped for two days in teas to give them a warm, beige glow. All beaded bracelets of many stones types had one thing in common, beautiful clasps, all unique and very, very special.
