The Garden Hen, a Houston-based company committed to educating and encouraging farm-to-table living with chickens in urban settings, opened doors to its first storefront on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 located at 10142 Jones Road, Unit 5B in Cypress…….and business is buzzing. So exciting!
Founded in 2012 by husband and wife duo Nicole and Michael “Chicken Mike” Graham, The Garden Hen started out as a passion for fresh eggs and has rapidly grown into a premier industry brand with over 200 customized chicken coops to date. In addition to sourcing the best pasture raised eggs in town, The Garden Hen has partnered with Clucking Rooster Farm to offer other local organic products for customers to enjoy. The newly established retail space will showcase ready-made chicken coops for immediate purchase ranging in price from $600 to $1,200 as well as a display wall with upgraded options for new-build coops to meet customer specific needs starting at $800.
“We are passionate about what we do and recognized a gap in the market for people who want to have that farm-to-table experience but also need to see the operation in-person before committing,” said Michael Graham, co-owner of The Garden Hen. “Once we decided to establish a place where people could pick up and bring home a coop and chickens on the same day, we knew we had an opportunity to add-on and the idea quickly grew from there.”
Art plays a unique role in the 2,000 square-foot warehouse space. Not only are guests invited to pose with The Garden Hen’s famed, Super Bowl-predicting mascot, Pinecone, in an interactive wall mural by well-known local artist Franky Cardona, but they are also encouraged to visit The Nest Art Gallery (@thenestartgalleryhtx). The Nest is a first-of-its-kind chicken themed exhibit where notable artists from across the country and aspiring students will showcase chicken and egg inspired artwork at approachable price points. Among the featured Texans are Taft McWhorter, Patti Lennon, Leah Jordan Art, Denis O’Donnell, and magician/artist David Rangel. Char Benson (Minnesota) and Kosmo (Mississippi) will also feature their art in The Nest.
Additionally, The Grahams included a giant green screen at The Garden Hen for their reality television show, City Chickens, which focuses on the lifestyle and business of raising backyard chickens in Houston. For more information on City Chickens, please visit citychickenstv.com.
