Oscars 2020 Fashion…..the Evening has Ended but the Buzz is Still in the Air

Lucky lady in so many ways…….our gal, Renee Zellweger stunning in her white Armani Privé gown that only took 12 fittings to get perfect, took home the top female Oscar of the night and then got to be photo’ed with two winners in every sense of the word…….Joaquin Phoenix, Best Actor and Brad Pitt, Best Supporting Actor, looking rather dapper themselves.

The Academy Awards…..Hollywoods last hoorah for the award season has now come and gone. Not really gone if you are like me and cannot stop reading all of the glam details that surround this big event, including all of the party chatter. The buzz from this event is like no other! For those of us that have covered it for years, to have it fall in conjunction with New York Fashion Week can be just more fashion information (M.F.I) than one can process. A definite case of fashion overload!

The Oscars have always been a particular favorite of mine……I love the Golden Globes that start it all and the Oscars that end the season. Having been a former Fashion Director in Retail it was always the gage we used to see what the shopping public would be wanting to see and be seen in on our very own “red carpets”…….or galas, weddings, and other special occasions coming up in our lives. I was a little ill-at-ease when I first clocked in to the red carpet to not see many of the regulars that have always graced that carpet…..where was Nicole, Jennifer, Reese, Catherine, Helen and many of the others that I have counted on for my fashion entertainment. The answer was in most cases that they arrived late and were ever present at the Vanity Fair After-Party where great looks could be seen by many who not only made that their entry into the evening there but for many of the red carpet fashion set it was on to their second look of the night!

I always struggle with all of the information and press that accompanies this event and since I don’t attend myself, unfortunately, I feel my role for my readers is to be the curator of it all and give to you what I feel the most memorable take-away is for the evening. (again, its the fashion director in me…..what are the must-haves I’ve got to have to look this good!!)

So, I’m giving it to you like this…….first, my faves of the night and then a recap of some dominant trends that have shown up on the carpet……

My favorite looks of the night…..

Oscars 2020 Fashion
Janelle Monae basically shut down the red carpet in this silver all-over beaded and hooded gown from Ralph Lauren….said to have approx. 600 beads hand sewn into this flashback to Grace Jones??

Natalie Portman wearing one of my favorite trends of the night, the evening cape, especially embroidered with the names of all of the female directors snubbed by the academy……statement maker for sure by Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior for the evening.

Penelope Cruz, stunning in two trends of the night…..vintage Chanel and embellishments, rose at the neck and pearls at the waist

Trend: Colors of the Night…

I loved all of the White but Shades of Pink was the color of the night.

Trend: Caped Gowns…

Caped gowns were quite the thing…….I always remember the amazing white Tom Ford on Gwyneth Paltrow a few years back at these awards. It started then but was on many celebs this night. Only a few highlights here.

Trend: Statement Jewels…

Necklaces were the main attraction with major masterpieces from the top jewelers in the world……strapless and bare fashion led the way for many special necks and if not, earrings and rings were next.

Trend: Embellishments…

Subtle add-ons to gowns could be seen on several gowns……a flower pin here or a brooch there. Many of the fashion flock are calling this out to be a trend that we will see more of in Spring dressing. Easy trend to take on.

Big Winner of the Night…..Parasite

Winners of the night…….team of creatives from the Best Picture Oscar winner, Parasite…..making history as the first foreign film to ever take that honor. The Oscar audience was jubilant at their win!
