As Tom Ford was pulling people into an abandoned subway station with no questions asked, Tory Burch was showcasing her inner Princess Di at the Brooklyn Museum. Safe to say, this NYFW brought along a whole new freshness. There was something in the air this season, as designers showed their Spring/Summer 2020 collections, and it wasn’t just Chanel No. 5! Our favorite fashion creators did more than just deliver breathtaking looks. They transported us to a long overdue new approaches to taking in fashion……all-around experiences that entertained while featuring their newest designs. Tom Ford promised that a change-up to fashion week was a top priority as he took over heading CFDA and he delivered!
While Tom Ford has been pushing for a change in NYFW for a while, this was the first season that truly put the NEW in New York Fashion Week! The Spring/Summer 2020 season was quickly stirred up from the start, with the controversy surrounding the formerly much anticipated Hudson Yards venue. Add on Mr. Ford as the new sheriff in the town that never sleeps, aka the new Chairman of the CFDA, and voilá! Shortening and reorganizing the most fashion-filled days of the season, bringing us a little bit of music, a little bit of art and a whole lotta fashion!
Underground with Tom Ford
Well below the bustling streets of New York City, and abandoned subway station was brought back to life with the likes of Anna Wintour, Miley Cyrus, Russel Westbrook and more. No, this wasn’t some weird dream we had one time. This was the creative genius work of none other than Tom Ford. Inspired by a 1965 photograph of Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick exiting a NYC manhole, Ford wanted to deliver a collection that was just “So completely New York”, said Ford in a press release.
Spiked hair, dark and rugged makeup, sunglasses inside…all things that you usually wouldn’t want to run into in an abandoned underground. However in Ford fashion, he made it just that….fashion! Relaxed pants paired with structured tops, vibrant hues following behind the darkest of black left eh crowd wondering what they would see next. Dancing the Night Away with Tommy Hilfiger
Yeah, yeah, yeah do the Harlem shuffle. We just can’t get that song out of our head after Tommy Hilfiger & Zendaya‘s made their departure from Paris last season back to NYFW for this party of a Spring/Summer 2020 runway show! We’re talking out-of-this-world 70’s glam walking to a toe-tapping soundtrack contributing to an all-around energy exploding experience. This season’s Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya show was all about celebrating black culture, starting with location, location, location!
The legendary Harlem performance hall, The Apollo Theater, has been celebrating black artistry for decades now making it the perfect backdrop for an affair of this grandeur! Live music playing the greats drummed in the background as models of all sizes, ages, and religions strutted their stuff. Velvet suits, wide-brimmed hats, flare trousers…oh my! This Spring/Summer 2020 collection had us drooling over the ode to the 70’s. You can ALREADY shop the collection by clicking HERE.
Royally Reminiscing with Tory Burch
Tory Burch is just like us…utterly obsessed with the Royal Family it seems! For her Spring/Summer 2020 collection, Burch drew inspiration from non other than Princess Diana for her Brooklyn Museum runway. However, the designer didn’t want a collection of knock-off pieces most notable photographed on the royal socialite. Instead, the collection was a loose interpretation of some of our favorite anecdotes of the fashion-filled era.
Silky silhouettes, full pouf sleeves and bold colors mixed with elegant floral pieces partnered with sneaks made for the ideal retro-yet-fresh effect of the collection. This collection is so obviously Burch through-and-through, but when laying our eyes upon specific pieces, it was hard not to picture the late people’s princess strutting the streets in just that look! Pop Cultured with Christian Siriano
Never one for a dull runway, it is no surprise MRG fave Christian Siriano has found his way onto this list! Throw in a little Ashley Longshore (another MRG fave…check out why HERE), and boy, do you have yourself a whimsical show full of bright colors, big personalities, and amazing art! Lining the room were paintings done by Longshore, showcasing Siriano’s major muses rocking his Spring/Summer 2020 favorites!
We’re talking everyone from Lade Gaga to Audrey Hepburn. Siriano wanted every prominent female powerhouse that has inspired him to be front-and-center! In a statement, Siriano explains why Ashley Longshore was the obvious choice to help him bring this pop-culture paradise to life. He wanted the atmosphere to be “whimsical and powerful and emotional…but playful and fun and not taking themselves too seriously”. Take a further look by clicking HERE, and you will see he more than accomplished what he was aiming for!
A Night of Jazz with Ralph Lauren
While the rest of NYC was looking into the future for Spring/Summer 2020, Ralph Lauren was busy debuting his dazzling Fall 2019 collection. However, this wasn’t your average, run of the mill runway show. Lauren created the hottest night club in town: Ralph’s Club– for one night only! Saxophone filled music floated through the air, as the Wall-Street-Ballroom-Turned-Jazz-Club housed the who’s who event of the week.
Lauren’s collection delivered the designers unique takes on two of the most essential pieces of fashion history- the tuxedo and the evening gown. The fashion was supreme, but the real star of the show was Janelle Monáe! The singer floated effortlessly around the room, serenading the crowd with some of the most beloved jazz favorites. The best ending of the night? When Monáe handed over the mic to Mr. Ralph Lauren himself, to give the crowd a little unexpected party favor!
