Fab Golden Globe hosts Tina Fey and Amy Pohler didn’t just look good but they were hilarious as well…got to love them!
This Sunday’s Golden Globe presentation while so hilariously pulled together by the two hosts shown above, from a fashion perspective took some digesting for me to comment on. At first, partially I feel because I was more distracted than usual with goings on in my house, so I was not 100% focused, I was somewhat underwhelmed. I felt, while there were several lovely gowns there were few stand-outs! I still feel that way, actually, but selected those that I felt worthy of mention. Not necessarily because I was awed by them, although there were a few, but because I felt they deserved some commentary. Here they are. Would love to know your feelings?!
Cate Blanchett – Armani Prive
My number one pick was Cate Blanchett in her Armani Prive black lace gown….so elegant, as always and I loved the gown’s surprise….backless view.
Lupita Nyong’o – Ralph Lauren
This exquisite look from Ralph Lauren which you cannot help but compare to Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford of a year past was absolutely smashing in both styling and color! Red was definitely a favorite color of the evening and this was the color at perfection.
Naomi Watts – Tom Ford
Lots of glitz either through beautiful fabrics or beading. One of my favorites of the evening was this beautifully slinky gown by Tom Ford on Naomi Watts. Love the richness of the non-color, color and the simplicity of the styling that made both the star and the gown an exquisite pairing.
Julianna Margulies – Andrew Gn
I am such a fan of Julianna Margulies, her fabulous show, The Good Wife and Andrew Gn who always manages to do unusual fabric treatments. This to me was exquisite, elegantly paired with matching earrings and upsweep hair (a favorite hairdo look, btw, for many of the stars this evening).
Amy Adams – Valentino
It’s shades of Red again, always done exquisitely by Valentino as his signature. This is one of the most sophisticated looks I’ve seen on Amy Adams and the tonal idea made these shades of red work fabulously on this redhead, which many consider a challenge.
Elisabeth Moss – J Mendel
This gown by J. Mendel included many of the leading trends of the season….lots of beading, sheer fabrications and high-low hemlines in rich burgundy, a shade of red, the color of the night….I chose this gown as it showed it all!
Emma Thompson – Vintage Lanvin
I think I may have chosen this one because I adore her, one of my favorite actresses that I aspire to be when I grow up but also I felt this vintage look from Lanvin to be an exquisite, sophisticated and very elegant choice for an elegant, yet uniquely charming lady!
Emma Watson – Dior
I loved this look…the simplicity of it. The surprise dual look of dress and pants and of course, a true Dior Red that looked stunning on Emma. I felt her complete look to work from the simplicity of her accessorizing to the retro feel of her upsweep hairdo, spoke to me of Audrey Hepburn and something she may have worn years back!
Kerry Washington – Balenciaga
This gown proves that pregnant women can still look very elegant and stylish. Kerry Washington did it right….one journalist wrote that in this white gown she looked just like Olivia Pope would look if she were pregnant, to me she looked beautiful as either gal, Kerry or Olivia!
Olivia Wilde – Gucci
Gucci does maternity…not hardly, I would imagine, but they did this exquisite rich green beaded gown for Olivia Wilde, which made for an elegant look that any Mom-to-be would feel great wearing. Who would think that a slinky knitted gown could look so fashion-right in maternity but then Ms. Wilde would be the one to pull that off!
Emilia Clarke – Proenza Schouler Gown and Houston’s own Baird & Baird clutch
On Emilia Clarke I loved the total package…the sophistication of black & white, softened by Houston’s own and my friend, Minnie Baird’s soft pink clutch, submitted and chosen by Clarke’s celebrity stylist, Kate Young, who had the thought while jogging through Beverly Hills the morning of, to go the route of soft, pale accessories and make-up, which BTW was inspired by famed Hollywood make-up artist and Texas native, Jillian Dempsey, from a Chanel mannequin inspiration…all made a perfect picture. Our congrats to Baird & Baird, also for getting a mention in the New York Times!
Michelle Dockery – Oscar de la Renta
As a huge fan of Downton Abbey and Lady Mary, I was thrilled to see Michelle Dockery step out in this high-low version in exquisite fabric from Oscar. Simplicity was the look she was seeking and with a dress of gilded gold, having it stand alone is the best choice!
Julia Roberts – Dolce & Gabbana/Diane Keaton – Ralph Lauren Made-to-Measure
Two looks that brought lots of controversy in Globe recaps in online articles and on Facebook. Both menswear/tailored in feel…..Julia Roberts chose to put a crisp white shirt under her D & G black strapless, a look seen on runways many times that I happen to like, without the shirt, just another strapless black gown. Diane Keaton looked very Diane Keaton in a look she’s pulled off so many times, ultimate tailored suiting, this time from Ralph Lauren….and the key to my desire to highlight her is that she gave one of the most warm and honest acceptance speeches to her good friend, Woody Allen, that I wanted to cheer for her! Both of these strong women I admire so much for being individualists, as they showed this evening!
